about

I don't know why I often feel compelled to turn songs into suites. Like it NEEDS to be a multi-part epic in order to express its precious self. It can be a bit much. The older I get, the more I admire concise 3 minute pop songs, and the more I question when I have an impulse to stretch a song out. And then this 8+ minute behemoth happened. It's the last song because to me it encompasses everything the other songs touch on, musically and lyrically and emotionally. It has that quieter coda at the end because I couldn't decide whether to go with the loud version or the quiet version, so I recorded both, and then decided to include it all. A day is full of those kind of echoes, I think, and this song is kind of trying to project a full day in the life up on the screen. My brother Jon Schiedermayer plays saxophone on it, brilliantly too, as is his way. Thanks, bro! The ambient ending maybe evokes the dreamfeed itself, which is when you feed infants from the bottle in the night while trying not to wake them, in order to train them to sleep longer without interruption. It's a good trick.

lyrics

Ain’t it a life? Roll down the longer way
The house is mine, it takes some time to see
We fill up, empty by end of day
Just tell me what to say

Oh I’m looking to get by til the weekend
Ride out the feelings down to the deep end
I know it’s time to belong to my friends
Yes sir I know

Ain’t it a life? A star for everyone
Morning light, take some time to be
Give it up, what you’ve been trying to save
Oh look, here comes the rain
(Don’t you want to lose control?)

Now I pinch my skin, now I know I’m not dreaming
Now the songbird flies from the sparrowhawk screaming
There’s a punchline coming and it’s something that I just can’t see
Now I’m pit-stained, drained, back from work in the backyard
Move into the shade with my sons, I’m the Death Star
There’s something I remember now, someone I still think I could be
And I’m looking for time on the weekend
I'm tired of the deep end
Time with a good friend
All I want is to hear you sing
