about

I wanted a song that came out of the gates strong. Also I've always wanted to mimic the guitar attack of Smashing Pumpkins circa Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. Several distortion pedals on max from both me and Jon to get that sweet crushing sustain. Lyrically, the words came in fragments over the course of a few years- the bits about everyday mundane domestic life eventually contrasting with a larger sense of anxiety about the chaos of society and fear about the natural world splintering. Parenthood ups the ante for sure. When my 5 year-old son cries out in the night during a thunderstorm and I lay beside him in his bed to comfort him, does he know that I'm somehow unnerved too and his closeness is also comforting me? He doesn't, but it's true, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one scared out of my mind some days. There's no way out but deeper in.

lyrics

Head down, in the sand
Got a house, got a kid
Settle in, settle down, go within, go without
La di da, la di da
Pale horse in the night again
Unknown number in the phone again
Clean the bathroom, clean the basement
Check the chimney then forget it
Is the water coming in again? Is the water coming in again?

Settle my sights, settle my youth
Step on a crack, fall right through

The sky is down, we’ll try to rearrange
Deny, deny, the fools are here to play/stay

Go without, go within, settle down, settle in
I got fear in my head tonight, I’m 38 and I’m scared at night
I’m scared of the thunder, I’m scared of the light

I settled my sights, I settled my youth
I stepped on a crack, I fell right through

I read the news today, oh girl
You were up all night cradling the world
What will become of this rage?
Will it hate? Create? Fade out like a dream?
